Sometimes I conduct interviews or surveys as part of my research for projects I’m working on.

User Research Study – 2024 June
Overview
I’m currently doing research for a project I’m working on, regarding tools and techniques for managing plant collection data.
For selected, qualified hobbyists, I’m extending an invitation to participate in a private, one-on-one, online call with me to go over some research questions.
Qualifications for participation
To ensure the data we uncover is relevant to the project, there are some qualifications you must meet to be eligible to participate.
Please make sure you meet the following criteria before reaching out to me.
If you can answer “yes” to ALL of the following, you qualify:
- Have you been collecting plants for one full year or longer?
- Do you own 15 or more different plant species?
- Do you label your plants with the scientific name? (using handwritten labels or a label printer, and put the label on or in the plant pot, bin, or mount)
- Do you keep any records regarding at least some of the plants in your collection? (documents, spreadsheets, notes, research, etc)
- Do you keep digital photos or videos of some of your plants on your phone or computer?
What to expect if you’re selected
The meeting will be online, via Google Meet or a similar service, and will be voice only. We won’t need to be on camera.
The call will be recorded, but please be assured the recording will be 100% confidential; I’m the only person who will ever have access to it.
The benefit of recording is that I can review it later, so I don’t need to worry about taking notes during the call.
This means I’ll be more present and the discussion will be smoother and more fun for both of us.
I’ll be asking you a variety of pre-planned questions, so the meeting will be somewhat structured.
However, the call will be informal and there should be time for back and forth discussions and a bit of fun 🙂
What I’ll need from you
- Consent to me recording the call (for my private use only)
- Full confidentiality. You won’t record, share, or disclose anything from the call with anyone else.

In that email, please do ALL of the following:
- Let me know you’re interested in the “user research study”
- Confirm to me that you fit the requirements listed above (that you answered “yes” to all of the questions)
- Confirm that you consent to the call being recorded (for my private use only)
- Confirm that you understand this meeting requires full confidentiality and that you’ll not record, share, or disclose anything from the call with anyone else.
- In a paragraph or two, summarize a bit about yourself and your plant collection (if you want, you can attach a few pics of your collection and/or favorite plants)
It will take me some time to wait for applicants, and to review the emails, so please be patient.
After I’ve reviewed all applications, I will reply to you and let you know if you will, or won’t, be invited to do a call.
Disclaimers
Please note that spots are limited, so not everyone who volunteers will be accepted.
I reserve the right to decline a volunteer for any reason if I don’t think they’ll be a good fit.
